From a subsurface image that is obtained from seismic data after data processing, it should be possible to retrieve information about the properties of the subsurface target. However, the image can be biased by the acquisition geometry: it contains an acquisition footprint, which can obstruct the subsurface characterization. Often, this footprint cannot be predicted straightforwardly, especially when the subsurface structure is complex. The method of focal beam analysis enables a proper evaluation of the influence of the acquisition geometry, overburden, and migration. This method is in accordance with wave theory, and it therefore enables a quantitative analysis of image quality at the target. The outcome of the analysis can be used either to take the acquisition footprint into account during processing and interpretation, or to judge whether the survey geometry that is used (or that is to be used) meets the requirements. These requirements follow from the goal that is pursued. This implies an integrated approach to acquisition geometry design, where all stages of acquisition, imaging, and characterization are considered. In this paper a numerical version of the Gulf of Mexico Ziggy model is used to predict image quality for a ‘full coverage’ geometry versus a parallel marine geometry. The effect on inversion of angle-dependent amplitudes is investigated.
