The changes in hormone content of styles and ovaries of Maryland Mammoth and Dixie Bright 102 tobacco flowers were followed subsequent to pollination. Hormone content of the apical half of the style increased rapidly during the first few hours and then dropped after 25 hours. Hormone content of the basal half of the style increased at a somewhat slower rate and continued to increase until 48 hours after pollination. Increases in hormone content of the ovary occurred at about 50 hours after pollination. Microscopic observation revealed that these changes in hormone level were correlated with the growth of pollen tubes suggesting a direct or indirect control of hormone synthesis by pollen tubes. The growth hormone being produced was identified as indoleacetic acid. This compound increased in amount in styles and ovaries when pollen tubes entered those tissues. It is concluded that indoleacetic acid, which initially comes from the style and later arises in ovary tissues, is responsible for subsequent growth of the ovary into a fruit.
