Materials and MethodsThree months before the meeting, letters were sent to all registered members of the association living outside the continental United States and to a control group of 83 randomly selected mem-bers living in the United States, informing them of our intent to conduct surveillance for diarrhea in meeting attendees. Participants were requested to register for the study immediately on arriving in Miami. They were told about the purpose of the study and instructed to notify us immediately via a 24-hr paging system if they contracted diarrhea. We defined diarrhea as two or more loose stools occurring in a 24-hr period with onset more than 24 hr after arrival in the United States (or in Miami for participants living in the United States), plus at least one of the following: abdominal cramps, tenesmus, vomiting, nausea, fever,
