Comments on an article by JD Russell et al.(see record 2017-32703-012). The article by Russell et al. describes a study that seeks to understand the patterns of connectivity among the 18 symptoms of PTSD defined in the DSM-IV. The study uses network science to discover patterns of symptom connectivity reported by 786 children exposed to the Hurricane Katrina and Gustav disasters. To the degree that specific symptoms represent expressions of corresponding underlying processes (eg, developmental, molecular, and neurologic), this application of network science could yield new and interesting information about the nature of childhood PTSD. More importantly, this study provides readers with a glimpse at what network psychiatry can provide to the field for research on the complex nature of psychiatric disorders. The study by Russell et al. offers child and adolescent psychiatrists a window into the possibilities that the methods of network science might disclose for studying the complex etiology of PTSD and other psychiatric disorders. The study by Russell et al. helps us to be more informed about the 2 sides of this scientific risk–reward tradeoff so that we can best appraise the potential of network psychiatry to address the complexity of psychiatric disorders.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
