Although pernicious anaemia occurs commonly among the Caucasian race only rare cases have been reported among other races. Three cases recently identified in the Sudan indicate that the disease may not be as rare among other races as previously believed. Of the three patients studied all three exhibited a variety of physical symptoms that can be associated with pernicious anaemia. Laboratory tests including routine blood counts bone marrow aspiration serum Vitamin B12 and folate evaluation the Schilling test gastric acid secretion estimates and other tests confirmed the diagnosis of pernicious anaemia in all cases. Following diagnosis the patients were given Vitamin B12 injection therapy and they all responded favorably. Because the symptoms for the disease vary thorough laboratory testing is essential for accurate diagnosis. With the improvement of facilities in the less developed areas of Africa it will be possible to diagnose the disease more precisely. As a result undoubtedly more cases of pernicious anaemia will be found among other races.
