Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem and one of the major causes of death and disability. The commonly seen symptoms related to TBI are disorders of consciousness (DOC), Post-traumatic headache (PTH), insomnia, and various sequelae of TBI (e.g. aphasia, pain, facial palsy, post-concussive syndrome).Acupuncture has a long history for the understanding and treatment of TBI, both acute stage and chronic period. In the last several decades, the developing acupuncture Brain theory has focused on the Brain itself and its affiliated channel, i.e. Du Mai (Governor Vessel). Du Mai points are the most commonly used points to treat TBI, scalp acupuncture and Dao-qi needling are the mostly commonly used acupuncture techniques for TBI. Both general acupuncture and unique Brain acupuncture treatments are all explained in detail. In China, acupuncture has been used for centuries to promote the recovery of consciousness after coma or other DOCs. Numerous studies have shown acupuncture as an effective method when applied to TBI. There are some studies that show that the possible mechanisms of acupuncture for TBI are increasing the excitability of nerve cells and the supply of oxygen and blood flow in the traumatized area of the brain.
