The present translation of Giorgio Agamben’s essay “La Potenza del pensiero” is based on an expanded version of the essay “On Potentiality” translated by Daniel Heller-Roazen in the collection edited by him in 1999, Potentialities: Collected Essays in Philosophy. The earlier translation was based on notes that Agamben made for a talk he delivered in Lisbon, 1987. The present text is based on the essay published in the collection La potenza del pensiero: Saggi e conferenze edited by Agamben in 2007, which includes other hitherto untranslated pieces including “Vocazione e Voce” (“Vocation and Voice”). In this lead essay on the concept of potenza, Agamben returns to Aristotle’s ontological questioning of being as that which must be undertaken within the horizon of phusis (nature) and kin esis (movement) and seeks to make a major contribution to the concept of life in terms of a very specific understanding of potenza as “the power to be able”—what it means to say that “one can.” However, it is important to recognize that this essay is not merely a scholarly or philological exegesis. Agamben’s interpretation constitutes something like a manifesto for his entire philosophical system, and in order to gain proper access to this piece in its creative specificity it is necessary to set it in its philosophical context and thereby note the singularity of Agamben’s contribution, namely, his intervention into Aristotle’s metaphysics as mediated by Martin Heidegger.
