The peripheral plasma levels of 17‐0times0‐steroids were measured serially by gas chromatography during pregnancy for 11 healthy primigravidae and compared with non‐pregnancy values. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and androsterone sulphate decreased markedly and progressively during pregnancy, the most rapid change being in the first trimester. Aetiocholanolone sulphate was undetectable. There was no variation in levels during the menstrual cycle. The changes in DHEA‐S are consistent with the increased utilization for fetoplacental synthesis and haemodilution.
