The major problem which arises when studying the movement of Maoris within New Zealand is not to prove that they are migrating to urban areas at a rapid rate–this is obvious to even the most casual observer-but to measure accurately the volume of movement and the demographic characteristics of the migrants. The calculation of detailed and accurate rates is hindered by a number of methodological problems, which arise largely from the paucity of data, the relative inaccuracy of the available data, and the small size of the Maori popula-tion. These problems are far more acute than those faced by students of non-Maori? internal migration. Yet it is necessary to have a more detailed and accurate picture of Maori in-migrationº to urban areas than has been available to date for the purpose of urban planning, to calculate Maori housing and employment needs, to study the location of sections of the Maori labour force, and, most important, to gain a general understanding of what must be one of the major social movements occurring among twentieth century Maoris. The primary aim of this paper is to review some of the methodological problems, and to apply the results of this review to an analysis of the major trend of Maori internal migration-from rural areas to urban areas.*
