How many factors contribute to the aging process? How many genes determine longevity? Are stochastic or programmed events more important? How do we distinguish primary and secondary factors? Do cells senesce or merely undergo terminal differentiation? How important in aging is active cell death (apoptosis)? What are the mechanisms of cell death? Is there a central aging clock, eg, via the neuroendocrine system? How do we investigate networks of cellular defense reactions to assess their role in aging? These are some of the challenging questions about aging that this conference has addressed. In this concluding discussion we consider if the aging process is really as complex as it would appear, and we examine new perspectives in aging research that are opening out. At the heart of our discussion is the view, represented in this conference, that an integrated study of the component processes of aging is necessary if we are to understand the phenomenon of senescence as a whole.‘,*
