It is entirely possible, some would say probable, others would say inevitable, that catalogues such as this may need to be used as new taxonomic starting points for systems of nomenclature with reference to specific groups. Whatever one's opinion on this point, the fact remains that Dr. Metcalf, with the aid of many assistants during his lifetime and others who have kept the work in operation since, has presented to the scientific world the results of thousands upon thousands of days of searching the] iterature and noting its contents. The USDA deserves a special vote of thanks for financing the publication of this series. This General Catalogue is indispensable to everyone interested in leafhoppers and a" must" for every biological library.
