In the first experiment on soil artificially infected with Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici spring wheat protected with Phialophora sp. (lobed hyphopodia) yielded significantly more grain than unprotected plants, but less than healthy control. In the second experiment on soil with natural populations of the take-all fungus, spring wheat seed, inoculated with Phialophora sp. (lobed hyphopodia) gave greater grain yields as compared with yields of uninoculated wheat. The protection was not fully effective against very high, natural populations of G. graminis var. tritici.
