The investigations into the catalytic systems revealed that the synthesis of methanol consists of two steps: methanol carbonylation to methyl formate and the successive hydrogenolysis (removal of a substituent using hydrogen) of methyl formate to methanol, leading to a net gain of one molecule of methanol. The reactions can be carried out concurrently, in a single reactor (single-stage process), or in two separate reactors (two-step process); this article discusses both processes and describes some of the major obstacles to overcome in order to develop a radically improved process.
