A calculated correction factor due to food [leaf] respiration was applied to the consumption term in energy budgets for invertebrates. The factor is expressed as a function of the growth rate of the invertebrates, the food respiration rate and the fraction of food remaining when changed. It was shown that applying this correction factor to several energy budgets balances them.
