The Coulomb's failure criterion for materials is commonly and implicitly applied to the stress components on failure plane. In this study, it was attempted to apply the Coulomb's criterion not only to the failure plane but also to general planes, which have various directions relative to the principal stress components at failure. Three dimensional failure conditions of various geomaterials including clean sands, saturated and unsaturated fine soils, cemented sands and a sandstone were examined and simulated by the newly proposed model. It is suggested that the direction of the plane for the Coulomb's failure criterion is one of the strength parameters the materials as well as its friction and cohesion.
