There are two reasons for looking at hair cell damage caused by intense sinusoidal sound. The first is the obvious one of trying to identify the parameters of sound stimuli which will produce a given amount and pattern of hair cell damage. The second is the attempt to obtain inferential information about the pattern of stimulation produced by sounds of known characteristics, which depends on the assumption of a relationship between damage patterns and stimulation patterns on the organ of Corti. Such an assumption has not been easy to justify in the past, since the apparently systematic, precise localization of tonal stimulation along the length of the organ of Corti has not seemed to correspond well to reported hair cell damage which has been notably variable, un selective and poorly related to parameters of sound exposure. Both aspects may have been subject to error.
