Abstract This article presents the first nationwide German survey on methods of spatial planning in practice in public planning institutions as well as in private planning offices. The main findings are: Firstly, general deficits in methodological competences of the professionals. Secondly, differences between the methods regarding familiarity, appliance and input-output- relations. Methods for the formation of communication processes between different parties in the planning process have considerably gained importance. In contrast, the traditional rational and elaborated valuation methods are less known and are more critically assessed by the respondents. However, a general “communicative turn” in planning methods cannot be observed. These findings are expected to have consequences for the further conception of study programs in spatial planning and to stimulate further research.
