The percentage composition of the mixture of n-alkanes found in sediment samples taken from oligotrophic lakes in north-west England and Scotland is shown to be dependent on the composition of the organic matter derived from the drainage basin. Supporting evidence has been obtained by examination of the alkane fraction of related soil and peat samples and by correlation with published chemical and pollen analyses of these sediments.
