As the book progresses, Pulford travels by public transport through the regions on either side of the Sino-Russian border, meeting the local people who live there and, in some cases, trade internationally between the border towns. Some of the settlements he visits are substantial cities such as Harbin and Khabarovsk; others have long lost their historic importance and become forgotten outposts or, more commonly on the Russian side, depopulated ghost villages. The multiple identities which Pulford describes–for each country, and in their perception of the other–are appropriately complex and nuanced.
