MATERIALS AND METHODSThe majority of these experiments were performed on cats, with most of the basic observations being repeated in dogs and rhesus monkeys. In all, 74 animals were used including 60 cats, 11 dogs, and 3 monkeys. All animals were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital. Monophasic slow waves were recorded both in situ and in vitro with flexible suction electrodes as previously described (9). Wh en recording in situ the abdominal cavity was first exposed by a midline incision, and the edges of the abdominal wall sutured to a supporting metal ring. The electrodes were then positioned and the abdominal cavity filled with mineral oil or Tyrode’s solution. The common indifferent electrode was placed either in the abdominal cavity or subcutaneously in the groin or thigh. Body temperature was maintained at 37.5-38.0 C with radiant heat and an electric heating pad. In vitro experiments were performed with the tissue in a bath of aerated (5% COP-95% 0,) Tyrode’s solution
