Hydatid cysts, the larval stage of the dog cestode Echinococcus granulosus, parasitize mainly the lungs and liver of animals (Dunn, 1978). The occurrence of hydatid cysts in the skeletal muscle of sheep is therefore of interest. Two adult male sheep of the local desert breed were admitted to the University of Khartoum Veterinary Hospital, Shambat. One animal presented large subcutaneous swellings on the shoulder and thigh; there were swellings on the thigh only in the second animal. The swellings were soft and mobile and an exploratory puncture yielded a clear fluid. The swellings were tentatively diagnosed as tapeworm cysts and were removed surgically. The shoulder cyst was attached to the infraspinatus muscle, while those on the thighs lay between the semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles. Each cyst had a thick opaque fibrous outer wall enclosing a thin inner wall which contained 125-140 ml of fluid; eight to ten daughter cysts had developed from the inner germinal layer, each brood capsule containing 10-15 ml of fluid and 30-50 protoscolices (Fig.). On the basis of their gross morphology and the size and arrangement of the circlets of hooks, the cysts were identified as hydatid (E. granulosus).
