In spite of the eradication of infectious dis eases, the life expectancy of nude mice (nu/nu) remains lower than that of the hairy heterozygous mice (nu/+). A wasting syn drome usually develops in nude mice which has been related to intercurrent infections. Since multiple endocrine alterations have been reported [6], the question arises as to whether wasting could result from a dimin ished heat production capacity due to progres sive neuroendocrine failure. High ambient temperatures of 26-28 C and 40-60% RH are recommended for the maintenance of nude mice compared to 23-24 C for nu/+ mice [1], It is possible that even these subtropical temperatures are too low for the nude mice to sustain their heat balance if diminished thy roid function occurs.
