To assess the impact of changes in ground surface conditions on active layer characteristics, thermal and hydrological properties in the active layer were monitored during the melting season in 2001 at seven different sites near Yakutsk, Eastern Siberia. These forest sites were in different states of post-disturbance recovery including a larch stand as a control site. In the initial period after vegetation disturbance, active layer thickness and ground heat flux increased significantly in spite of decreased net radiation. Further, evapotranspiration was strongly impeded allowing the accumulation of soil water in the active layer. At sites 5 to 19 years after vegetation disturbance, net radiation increased, ground heat flux decreased, and thaw depths decreased to the initial level with vegetation recovered. The results suggest that in this region disturbed forest tends to regain its initial active layer conditions as vegetation recovers unless deep, rapid thawing of ice-rich permafrost occurs.
