Innovative complex product development is based on extensive distribution of work packages in product development networks. With growing shares of coordination, cooperation and collaboration, the number of special problems increases. This leads to efficiency losses and frustrated employees in product development. The research work in hand addresses process interfaces between single process steps of distributed product development and, furthermore, bridging interface processes as well as interface errors which prevent smooth collaboration. Considering distributed product development as a sociotechnical system, empirical research and literature studies are conducted to analyze issues and root causes for the subsequent development of concepts to prevent interface errors. Therefore, among others, established methods of work and organization theory and micro economics are used to found an error prevention framework for interface processes. Several concept elements are partly evaluated in terms of a proof of concept software implementation and partly in an experiment with student project teams.
