In sickle cell disease, various disturbances commonly affect the bones and joints. Vaso-occlusive events in blood vessels that traverse the bones cause acute and chronic morbidity. Damage of the vessels may result in metabolic and structural changes. Limited joint mobility, along with acute and chromic pain can be severely disabling. Bone and Joint disorders are the most common cause of chronic pain in people who have sickle cell disease. This article highlights aspects of sickle cell disease that affect healthy bone and joint function.
