Most species of primates inhabit the tropical and subtropical zones. Among primates man is the only species that has expanded its sphere of life as far as the arctic tundra zones. Among nonhuman primates the Japanese monkey (AJacaca fuscata) is the species whose distribution is the most northerly in the world. It has been well known from olden times among hunters called" Matagi" that Japanese monkeys lives in the snowed-up mountains of north-east Japan. When the climate of the Japan Islands was warmer than today, far more. Japanese monkeys must have lived in the mountains of" north-east Japan. They live at present as if they had been driven into dccp valleys in the deciduous tbrest zone where it snows two meters or more deep in winter and no leaves grow for more than five months of the year.
