The goal of genetic studies of animal viruses has been the elucidation of the structure and function of the viral genome. The ultimate aim has been the assignment of functions to individual viral polypeptides in infected host cells and the understanding of genetic processes such as transmission, recombination, and complementation. Necessary tools to accomplish these goals are viral mutants, defective in particular processes, whose lesions can be assigned to particular regions of the viral genome.
