The red cell volume, plasma volume and the tissue hema-tocrit were determined for the frozen adult rat and for each of its major organs or tissues. Blood volumes were expressed in microliters per gram of organ or body weight. The isotope dilution method was applied using Fe59 tagged erythrocytes for the red cell determinations and I131 serum albumin for the plasma determinations. Animals were frozen in liquid N and organs were removed and assayed without blood loss. The mean blood volume of female rats is 53.1 [mu]l/g (C.V. 1.5) with a body hematocrit of 36. The corresponding value for males is 55.6 [mu]l/g (C. V. 2.3) and a hematocrit of 36.7. The organ blood volumes range from a high of 517 [mu]l/g for the lung to a low of 15.6 [mu]l/g for the testis. The tissue hematocrits and the total blood volumes per unit weight of 22 different organs and tissues are presented.
