HOUPT, KATHERINE A., AND ALAN N. EPSTEIN. Ontogeny of controls of food intake in the rat: GI jll and glucoprivation. Am. J. Physiol. 225 (l): 58-66. 19 73.-The development of the controls of food intake was studied in the rat. Weight gain was the measure of intake in the suckling. Deprivation stimulated feeding from birth. One-day-old rats deprived for 4 hr gained 100% more than nondeprived controls. Sucklings, 3-7 days old, deprived for 3-5 hr also ate more and intake was increased up to 20 hr following deprivation. Gastric loads of milk and kaolin depressed subsequent intake quantitatively. But water, which empties rapidly from the stomach, did not. Glucoprivation produced by 2-deoxy-D-glucose(2-DG) did not increase intake in sucklings 2-21 days old despite its effectiveness in stimulating hyperglycemia. Nor did 2-DG increase feeding in 21-day-old rats weaned at 14 days despite the effectiveness of deprivation at that age. The feeding response to glucoprivation did not begin until 4-5 weeks of postnatal age. From the outset, deprivation stimulates feeding and gastrointestinal fill suppresses it. But the glucoprivic control of feeding does not mature until well after weaning. gastric emptying; blood glucoseTHE INGESTIVE BEHAVIOR of mammals undergoes a dramatic transformation during ontogeny. They begin life as virtual parasites on their mother, completely dependent on her for nutrition from conception to weaning. When ingestive behavior begins abruptly at birth, it is simple and automatic. It is not differentiated into feeding and drinking. The neonate simply sucks a fluid of fixed composition which provides both food and water. In a remarkably short time, typically a matter of weeks, the suckling becomes a freeforaging adult. The single, simple mode of ingestion is transformed into the set of complex phenomena that are now well studied in the adult mammal, particularly in the
