To ascertain whether the occasional failures in swine erysipelas serum therapy might be due to antigenic differences between strains ofE. rhusiopathiae, W. carried out a study of 43 strains obtained from various parts of the world. Cultural characteristics showed the strains to be biologically similar. Agglutination tests showed that they could be divided roughly into two groups, the large majority falling into one group and only five into the other; further tests, agglutination, agglutinin absorption and biological, confirmed this. No correlation between groups and virulence could be ascertained. Each group possessed a heat-stable specific antigen, and in addition each probably contained two heat-labile antigens, which were present in different proportions in the two groups. These latter antigens would appear to be the important ones with regard to resistance to infection, since sera of low potency containing antibodies to them protected mice against many lethal doses of an organism of the same group. Field trials with swine to demonstrate protection following vaccination gave negative results, and intradermal tests to test active immunization showed that formolized vaccine failed to protect plgs against a minimal infective dose.-J.
