Reassurances are frequently offered to no avail, that weight is increasing satisfactorily, that toddlers have physiologically smaller appetites and gain weight slowly, that snacks are often as nutritious as a meal. But some mothers find it unbearable to believe that their children would take sufficient if given the choice. In these circumstances child or mother stands to lose face if food is eaten or left, the couple battling for control need more help in this situation. The medical profession also required convincing of the infant and child’s ability to take a sufficient and balanced diet. Early research of Davies [2] gave permission for the demand feeding movement to become established. More recently [3] the individuality of food needs has been shown, there being no “correct amount” which a child should take ‘to be healthy’and grow adequately.
