MethodsThe basis of both procedures is that parts of the parent colony can be removed and made into small similar-sized pieces, which will continue to grow and function normally. The method is analogous to taking plant-cuttings. Because of the diversity of growth forms of corals it is unlikely that all coral genera will be amenable to these procedures. The methods described here are appropriate to those corals with branching or massive growth form. The procedures adopted ensure that the preparations can be handled without damage to the living tissue, and that the skeletal surface, which is exposed during the manipulations, is sealed to prevent attachment and growth of filamentous algae or attack by boring organisms.
