Viswanathan and associates! reported in the REVIEW the occurrence of high altitude pulmonary edema in 7 of 28 monkeys placed in a revolving drum while breathing an atmosphere with an oxygen concentration of approximately 10 per cent. Attempts in this laboratory to induce pulmonary edema in squirrel monkeys have been unsuccessful. Ten squirrel monkeys were exposed to a simulated altitude of 16,500 feet (404 mm Hg) in a hypobaric chamber for 55 days. During the first 3 days of the experiment, the monkeys were forced to swim until exhausted in a deep tank in an 11 per cent oxygen atmosphere. When the animals were exhausted, they would vomit and then sink. When retrieved from the water and laid on their backs, none of the monkeys could right themselves. Immediately after the exercise period, the monkeys were towel-dried and returned to the hypobaric chamber. Brief daily periods of exposure to sea level pressure were required to take chest films. After 55 days of exposure to 404 mm Hg, the monkeys were returned to sea level pressure
