1. As in bloodstream stages of T. brucei and T. congolense, the mitochondrion of bloodstream T. vivax is basically a single thread with a posterior expansion to form the kinetoplast capsule, but unlike the mitochondrion of T. brucei, though like that of T. congolense, the mitochondrion of T. vivax is at all times diaphorase-positive and furnished with tubular cristae. The bowl-like anterior concavity of the T. vivax kinetoplast capsule is not found in other salivarian trypanosomes.2. Washed whole organism preparations of the Swain strain oxidize glucose, glycerol and 1-3 glycerophosphate at similar rates and succinate at about half the rate for these substrates (cf. T. brucei bloodstream forms never oxidize succinate). Alpha-oxoglutarate is oxidized at a very low (just measurable) rate (cf. T. brucei where only stumpy forms oxidize this substrate). The respiration of all these substrates is cyanide insensitive but 100% sensitive to inhibition by m-chlorobenzhydroxamic acid (0" 1-0" 2 mM m-CLAM completely abolished respiration).
