Various forms of manganese dioxide have been made by methods described in the literature and examined by chemical analysis, x-ray and electron diffraction, and electron microscopy. Conclusions reached by previous workers mainly from x-ray analysis have, in general, been confirmed, but some new facts emerge, the most important being evidence of slightly differing forms of a-MnO2 dependent in part on crystal size, and of the presence of layers of MnO and~-Mn20~ or Mn~ O4 on the surface of certain of the preparations.
