Metal complexes of the type [M (L) 3] C12, where M= Ru (II) and Os (II) and L= 6-methyl-2, 2'-bipyridine, 6, 6'-di-methyl-2, 2,-bipyridine, 2-methyl-1, 10-phenanthroline, and 2, 9-dimethyl-1, 10-phenanthroline, have been prepared and isolated. Absorption spectra, emission spectra, luminescence quantum yields, and lifetimes of these complexes have been measured, and values of the radiative and nonradiative rate constants havebeen calculated. Although the positions of absorption and emission bands are hardly affected by the methyl substituents, the molar extinction coefficients, emission quantum yields, and lifetimes are decreased in value compared to complexes of the parent 2, 2/-bipyridine or 1, 10-phenanthroline ligands. Quantum yield and lifetime changes are greater for the dimethyl-substituted complexes of ruthenium, while methyl and dimethyl substitution produces about the same change for osmium complexes. Possible causes of the decrease in quantum yield are discussed.
