THIS book gives an account of the spectra of molecular crystals and their interpretation in terms of exciton theory. It emphasizes the special characteristics of molecular crystals. In particular, simpler aspects of the spectra are dominated by the molecular nature of the electronic transition involved. The more typical solid state effects associated with band theory require more subtle experiments. The book takes as its theme those experiments which give information about exciton band structure. Experimental and theoretical aspects are closely intertwined in the text. The result is a very interesting discussion, but one which the general reader may find less accessible. The coverage is extensive: not only experiments on perfect crystals but also on doped and mixed crystals are described. SH WALMSLEY
