The cell wall-bound material which accumulated in cultured Pinus banksiana cells after treatment with an elicitor derived from an ectomycorrhizal fungus was characterized by a combination of saponification, solvent extraction, gel permeation chromatography, [C-14]phenylalanine feeding, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase inhibition, and analysis of alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation products. These analyses revealed that the wall-bound material recovered from elicited cells had the features of true gymnosperm lignin and that a significantly greater amount of lignin accumulated in elicited cells than in control cultures. The contents of cell wall-bound esters and ethers of ferulic acid were also enhanced in the elicited cultures.
