Bohr effect, refer to the following reviews: Wyman (1964); Perutz (1970); Antonini and Brunori (1971); Edsall (1972); Kilmartin and Rossi-Bernardi (1973). The oxygen affinity ofHb, at pH above 6, increases with pH (the alkaline Bohr effect). Conversely, oxygenation results in therelease of hydrogen ions by the Hb molecule. At pH below 6, the 02 affinity increases with decreasing pH and the Hb molecule absorbs H+ ions upon oxygenation (the acid Bohr effect).The Bohr effect can be measured by two independent methods. First, it can be measured from the difference be-tween the pH titration curves of oxyhemoglobin (Hb02) or (carbonmonoxy) hemoglobin (HbCO) 2 and deoxyhemoglobin (deoxy-Hb).
