Adult male rats were castrated and divided into 4 groups, 3 of which received different amts. of testosterone propionate by daily injn. while a control group was treated with inert oil. Effects of the exptl. treatment of the glans penis included changes in the number of cornified, genital papillae which tended to disappear if no androgen was admd., to decrease in number under the influence of small hormone dosages, and to remain normal in animals receiving larger amts. of androgen. Data taken from an earlier expt. on mating behavior of castrated rats showed that changes in the anatomy of the glans and changes in sexual performance are closely related. Histological study of the glans suggests that the genital papillae may act as accessory sensory structures, by stimulating tactile nerve endings that lie beneath them. The decreased sexual behavior in untreated castrates and in males receiving sub-optimal amts. of exogenous androgen is interpreted as being due in part to lowered sensitivity in the copulatory organ. Even if the present hypothesis is correct, the behavioral consequences of castration and replacement therapy cannot be explained entirely in terms of altered genital sensitivity. Other evidence makes it plain that the effects of androgen are mediated by a complex combination of mechanisms, of which the supposed tactile functions of the glans are only one.
