The study of airflows through large openings, e.g. doorways in buildings, is important with regard to energy conservation and indoor air quality. Experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out in order to study airflows through large openings and several airflow algorithms have been developed for computer programs. These models are satisfactory when used to describe flows through simple cracks or sharp-edge openings, but improved algorithms are needed for more complex applications. The present paper provides an up-to-date survey of studies of airflows through large internal and external openings and outlines the requirements of research which is deemed to be necessary to develop improved algorithms.
