Correspondence: Andrea Mantell-Seidel, D.Arts, 5900 SW 84th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33143; seidela@fiu.edu. Miami then and now: Elian Gonzalez and Papa played out the conflicting dramas of Cuban nationalism. Impoverished Haitian boat people repatriated back to Haiti. Versace gunned down on Ocean Drive amidst the glamour and decadence of the historic Art Deco District. Santeria priests sacrifice chickens on the banks of the Miami River. Images of Miami Vice juxtaposed against the intoxicating rhythms of Miami Nice. Working class rumba, aristocratic danzon, populist merengue and polyphonic salsa fluidly merge on the dance floor at Café Nostalgia in Little Havana, recreating the glamour, images and sounds of l930s old Havana. In the idealism of the potential of dance and music as the great levelers, in the promise of the celebration of difference through rhythm and song, I conceived the Dancing Across Disciplines (DAD) project (1998-2002), funded by a $225,000, threeyear grant from the US Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education. The project was sponsored by and housed at the Intercultural Dance and Music Institute (INDAMI) at Florida International University (FIU)’s Latin American and Caribbean Center in Miami where I have served as founder and director since 1992. Reflecting the large Latin American and Caribbean population of the Greater Miami area, INDAMI programs emphasize the dance and music of these geographical areas.
