The chapter presents an inventory of the experimentally established acoustic cues to the perception of segmental phonemes. Throughout the chapter the focus is on the identity of the cues, rather than on how they are processed. It is argued that the literature supports the existence of more than one cue to a single phonetic percept. Such multiple cues are included in the inventory. The inventory first addresses the cues to consonant identification, proceeding through the consonant classes from stops to semivowels. The cues to each class are identified and within each class the cues to place of articulation and, where relevant, voicing category are specified. Next to be treated are the vowels and the acoustic cues to their perception. Besides the obvious role of formants, the roles of f‐zero, vocalic duration, consonant context and normalization schemes are discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how the concept of the cue has evolved.
