Thirty-five cases of vernal conjunctivitis were studied to determine:1.1. whether antibodies to grass, as measured by the direct skin test, the Prausnitz-Küstner reaction, and the bis-diazotized benzidine hemagglutination test to a grass antigen (rye grass), occur in a significant number of patients with this disease, and2.2. whether clinical features of the disease correlate with those of known atopic conditions.A significant number of patients with vernal conjunctivities were found to have antibody to grass antigen by all methods used; certain features of the disease are highly suggestive of atopic etiology; and there is a trend to correlation of spring exacerbations with the presence of antibodies to grass antigen. On the basis of the clinical and laboratory evidence cited, vernal conjunctivitis seems to represent a type of atopic sensitization.
