An increasing number of colleges throughout the country are now engaging in the practice of awarding “credit for life and/or work experience.” This recognition that learning which takes place outside of a formal academic setting is worthy of collegiate credit is a growing phenomenon. Some of the institutional practices currently being followed are discussed along with a number of issues which any institution about to embark on the process should consider in order to establish appropriate policies and procedures.
