There is a need for careful examination of an emerging group of questions concerning the provision of dental care. Collectively, these questions address the" appropriateness ofcare", a concept that includes considerations of the accuracy of risk assessment and diagnosis, and treatment outcomes such as the relative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness ofalternativetreatment strat-egies, togetherwith the short-and longer-term physiologicaland psychological results of those strategies (Kress, 1980). This editorial argues for readers' acceptance and endorsement of re-search directed at these questions. The argument must be pre-sented for three reasons. First, many readers maynotrealize that results of sound, objective studies do not exist to answer these questions. Second, some readers may not value or support the type of research activity necessary to answer the questions. Third, many readers also may not realize that dental research is in danger of losing its relevance to those who make policy deci-sions affecting research funding if concerns about appropriate-ness ofcare are not acknowledged bythe dental research commu-nity.
