Distribution coefficients are measured for the partition of metal ions between anionexchange resin and organic solvent-water mixtures containing hydrochloric acid. The presence of an organic solvent causes metal ions to be taken up at lower hydrochloric acid concentrations. In many cases, distribution coefficients are significantly higher than in water-hydrochloric acid systems. If other conditions are comparable, the order of distribution coefficients in alcohol-water-hydrochloric acid is: isopropyl > ethyl > methyl alcohol. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be carried out by eluting with alcohol-water-hydrochloric acid mixtures of different compositions. Successful separations of a number of mixtures are reported.
