THE ceruloplasmin molecule, a component of the α-2-globulin fraction, contains more than 90 per cent of the plasma copper. Variations in its concentration in the sera of normal individuals and in different pathological conditions have been extensively investigated1. Little is known, however, of its function and turnover kinetics. It is evident that ceruloplasmin acts, at least in part, as an oxidase in vivo. Gitlin and Hughes labelled ceruloplasmin with iodine-131 and obtained a biological half-life of 5–7 days in five persons with unrelated chronic disease2. The biological half-life of 131I-labelled human ceruloplasmin in mice was found to be 0.92 days3. In the work reported here, the turnover of ceruloplasmin was investigated in human beings by means of an 131I-labelled preparation.
