The mass hierarchy of the leptons and quarks is interpreted as a consequence of a coherent state phenomenon (“flavour democracy”). It is emphasized that particular forms of the mass matrices can arise from the coherent state basis. The violations of the “flavour democracy” turn out to be relatively large. Numerical examples are presented.
