to understand better the crucial role played by the qualitative and quantitative development of maritime publications in France. "Maritime books" expanded the intellectual and imaginary horizons of the growing ranks of an educated readership interested in voyages and the exploration of distant lands. They contributed to the emergence of a new, less hostile and frightening vision of the sea. The century of Enlightenment described here is one of increasing human "control" of the sea. These books also provided professionals of the sea, whether civil or military, naval architects, cartographers, physicians or captains, with increasingly efficient tools on which they would rely more and more heavily to guide them in all steps of their work.
